Alumni Tres Leches: Redefining Seattle Music

Tres Leches - Nova alumni Zander Yates and Alaia D'Alessandro with Ulises Mariscal - were included in KUOW’s recent article Beyond Grunge: 15 Artists Redefining Seattle Music. Congratulations to Tres Leches and a big thank you to Zander for coordinating the music and AIAIA for performing at this year’s Novaplosion. Stay tuned for the 3rd Annual Novaplosion in Fall 2019!

When translated from Spanish to English, Amorfo means changeable, amorphous. That's not just the name of Seattle punk trio Tres Leches' debut album, but also its entire M.O. During their riotously fun shows, members Alaia D'Alessandro, Zander Yates and Ulises Mariscal frequently switch instruments on stage. Their songs are bilingual diatribes, skeptical of capitalism and invested in the power of community. Describing their brand of punk requires a lot of prefixes like art-, pop- and noise-; the band even has an incredible ska-punk iteration of the Leadbelly children's song "Ha-Ha This Away." Few bands in Seattle are as thrillingly unpredictable. --Martin Douglas

Nova Project High School students raised the Trans Flag and Philly Pride Flag to recognize the origins of the LGBTQ+ movement at its 2nd Annual Pride Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday, June 6th.

Student remarks:  “Thank you for coming to the Nova Projects 2nd annual pride flag raising, in honor of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. This year we have put up the Trans Flag and the Philly Pride flag to recognize the origins of the LGBTQ+ movement, which was started by courageous queer and trans people of color.

We are celebrating 50 years of Pride, of revolution, and of fighting for our rights. There are many ways to celebrate and get involved.  We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go, so while you’re celebrating at Volunteer Park, Trans Pride, or Pridefest, also try and get involved in activism in any way you can.”

In honor  of Pride Month, the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, our LGBTQ+ youth and the adults who support them, please consider a donation to Nova High School: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/alliance-for-education/nova-high-school.

Nova Alums in the News (1.21.19)

BRIDGE WEEK

Bridge Week is Jan 31, Feb 1, 4,  and 5. Also called Nova Con, this 4-day long series of workshops and classes hosted for the students of Nova High School. Nova Con happens twice a year, at the beginning of Fall and Spring semesters. During the first four days of each semester, students engage with workshops and community building events. Facilitators teach one-hour classes that allow teachers the time to meet individually with students to craft their unique educational experience. For Nova Con teaching details and a volunteer form, see the FoN Events page. Nova can’t provide this individual educational experience without the support of folks like you!  Can't take time to teacher? Consider providing fuel to teachers and students. Refreshment sign-up HERE.

NOVA ALUMS IN THE NEWS

Our alumni are making the news. Max Paradiso wrote an article recently about preserving the sound of the Stradivarius by quieting the town of Cremona, Italy. It was featured in the New York Times. Read about it here.

Congratulations to Azura Tyabji, Seattle Youth Poet Laureate. Not only does she represent her city—she now represents the West Coast! Azura was just named a national ambassador for the National Youth Poet Laureate Competition. Take Action for Levies

The levies passed! Now what? While the McCleary decision that requires the state to fund schools itself did not cap levy distribution, there are caps that the won't lift to allow SPS to access the money it needs to meet the basic education requirements, which decreases what we can spend per child.

Lifting the levy lid - #liftthelevylid - is requesting that we change our formulation to receive funding from the renewed levies.  Our taxes for our students.

NOVA LEVY FUNDS POSTCARD PARTY

THURS, MARCH 21
6:30 - 7:30pm

UPDATED SPS INFO FOR NOVA

UPDATED SPS INFO FOR NOVA

Thank you to all the Nova Students who worked on the content for the Seattle Public School page for Nova High School. This content is student created -- possibly unique for SPS -- and gives a firsthand account of Nova with very helpful information that families need and students are looking for when considering enrollment in a Seattle public school. Nova for the win!

Also, THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the Winter Starry Night dance a success, and who came to enjoy music, laughter, and dancing.  Looking forward to prom this year, and more Nova fun.
